VSM & Flow Engineering Facilitation Training

VSM facilitation workshop

What You'll Learn

In this practical training, you will learn how to prepare and facilitate a full VSM workshop using Flow Engineering and working with your own team's real challenges.

The goal is for you to get as much practical experience with VSM as possible. You'll walk away with the technical know-how, templates and confidence to keep facilitating these sessions in your organization.

We'll work together on the challenges in your actual value stream, whether that's Feature Idea to Production, Code Commit to Deployment, Incident Resolution, or Customer Onboarding. You'll map it, measure it, and design improvements during the workshop.

I'll point you to the mistakes I made when facilitating these workshops, so you can avoid them.

Workshop Agenda

Each session starts at 2pm London time and lasts for 1h30.

1

Monday

Introduction to VSM + Outcome Mapping

Result: Define improvement needs, goals, benefits, and next steps

Risk mitigated: Investing in irrelevant improvements

2

Tuesday

Current State Value Stream Mapping

Result: Visualize delivery, find and measure key constraints

Risk mitigated: Optimizing a process with no impact on your Outcome

3

Wednesday

Dependency Mapping

Result: Connect bottlenecks to dependencies

Risk mitigated: Insufficient understanding of the main constraints

4

Thursday

Future State Value Stream Mapping

Result: Team re-designs delivery for fast flow and high quality

Risk mitigated: Failing to create a visible target for change

5

Friday

Improvement Roadmap + Follow-up

Result: 3 month Roadmap to achieve the Outcome: owners and progress metrics

Risk mitigated: Failing to integrate improvements into each team's work

I won't leave you hanging after the workshop: includes 1h VSM coaching and templates to support you in running your own workshop in your organization.

Who Should Attend

This workshop is for leaders and practitioners who need to improve cross-team delivery:

  • Product/Engineering Leaders dealing with slow feature delivery, misaligned teams, or unclear bottlenecks
  • DevOps/Platform Engineers trying to reduce deployment pain and improve flow across multiple teams
  • Agile Coaches/Scrum Masters who need concrete tools to facilitate system-level improvements (not just team-level)
  • Delivery/Service Managers struggling with incidents, delays, or cross-team coordination

No VSM experience required. I'll share lessons from 5 cross-team VSM initiatives, helping you avoid common pitfalls and facilitate your own sessions successfully.

"Miguel organized everything for us, we just had to join the workshops and get immediate value from them. We invested a bit, but the outcome is huge. Even if no further actions are taken, simply doing the workshops shows you what the bottlenecks are, what's slowing you down, and what is hurting the processes."
— Jukka Palosaari, Director of Engineering, Relex Solutions

Typical Motivations for VSM

Value Stream Mapping and Flow Engineering help with the thorniest problems. This is for you if you're experiencing some of these:

  • Releases cause expensive disruptions, losing customers
  • 25-50% of time spent fixing customer problems
  • Too much work and too little capacity
  • Slow customer onboarding loses deals
  • Can't deliver features fast enough to stay competitive, close deals

Typical Results from VSM

  • +60% faster delivery (prev. clients)
  • −20% production defects
  • Release on demand (ex: weekly)
  • −20% time in manual work (do more with the same people)

The results you get depend on your context: the bigger the existing delays, quality problems and political will for improvement, the bigger opportunities you may find.

Because Software delivery is more about people than software, you can get immediate improvements in these sessions, where the people with the power to change and the people with the know-how about the change are present, and they are anchored on the same target outcome and looking at the same value stream data: change happens in hours, not weeks.

Logistics

There are no pre-requisites, you'll learn everything you need during the workshop session.

You're encouraged to bring along as many of your team members as possible, so you can learn together, use your own context as much as possible and even find some quick wins.

"The value stream mapping Miguel organized for our Identity Service team had several impacts. On one side, a tremendous potential was unveiled how the process of deploying changes can be improved. On the other, it was a great team building exercise."
